10 Great LGBTQ Couples In Anime & Manga

LGBTQ representation has always been a bit of a touchy topic in media. For example, the character of America Chavez was met with some pushback on social media for being gay. This has led to some people calling for censorship of Doctor Strange 2.

Despite these controversies, many creators endure to showcase fantastic LGBTQ characters. In particular, Japan has had a lot of great examples of LGTBQ couples throughout the years in anime and manga.  While it's a long road ahead, these couples prove that writers can make amazing stories for people of any orientation and sexuality.

Two years ago, I wrote a post on my favorite gay/lesbian couples.  Since then there have been some updates and changes. So here are some of my favs!

Sailor Moon / Sailor Moon Crystal:

Of course, I will start off with my most favorite anime, Sailor Moon.  This show boast two couples, the first one being my most favorite, Sailor Uranus and Sailor Neptune (Hakura and Michiru).

Now when I first got into Sailor Moon, I thought Hakura was appreciate the Starlights (from Sailor Starts).  I had initially thought that she was actually a guy who changed genders when she transformed into a Sailor Scout.  But of course after much researching, that turned out not to be the case.  I find them to be the most beautiful couple of the series rather than picking the obvious choice of Usagi and Mamoru.

In Sailor Moon Crystal, I loved their designs because they were made to be even more pretty!  And I’ll have to admit, I started girl crushing on Haruka.  I loved how the show gave them their own ending song and sequence.  I wish the song was on iTunes&#;

Welcome to Sunday&#;s Select Sevens at Anime Rants! Today we&#;ll gaze at some LGBT+ pairs in anime. These aren&#;t necessarily my personal favorite couples or the best or the most unforgettable. They&#;re just a sampling selected from the anime I&#;ve seen, which focus on these couples as the main characters.

1. Akuma no Riddle: Tokaku and Haru

Tokaku (blue hair) is novice assassin assigned to kill Haru (reddish hair). However, Tokaku instead feels attracted to Haru, and becomes her protector. They hold some truly sweet and sexy moments in the show. It was highly enjoyable to verb their interesting personalities interact, with Haru the sweet and calm one, and Tokaku the one who is quiet but intense.

2. Bloom Into You: Nanami and Yuu

For the next couple, we have Nanami (dark hair) and Yuu (light hair). This show did a excellent job portraying an LGBT+ couple. One of the most curious things about them is that Nanami is clearly sexually attracted to Yuu, who becomes romantically bonded to Nanami but does not feel comfortable with too much physical contact.

10 Best BL Anime Couples, Ranked

Boys Love anime, often simply referred to as BL, is a unique romance genre that focuses solely on relationships between male characters. The genre is niche, catering to a very specific audience in most cases. But while BL isn’t appreciated by everyone, the genre features some pretty great romance stories and many amazing couples.

BL anime are often notorious for their underprivileged depictions of LGBTQ+ relationships, but despite this bad reputation, many BL couples are actually very well-written and lovable. Featuring nuanced characters and unique relationship dynamics, BL romances have come a long way over the years and many couples have become iconic within the genre.
