The ABCs of LGBTQ+

We learn our ABCs in preschool but for many people there is still a series of letters that seem unfamiliar. It’s time to demystify the LGBTQIAP+ acronym.

The following explanations of each letter are compiled from sources including the LGBTQIA Resource Center at UC Davis, OutRight Action International, The New York Times and interviews with Pepperdine students. However, the letters symbolize individual people and their identities. Therefore, the following explanations are in no way all-inclusive and people are always free to choose to identify how they feel most comfortable.

L is for Lesbian

Lesbian refers to a woman who is primarily emotionally or sexually attracted to other women. The term woman here refers to an individual’s gender identity rather than their biology. Non-binary individuals may also name as lesbian.

G is for Gay

Gay specifically refers to a human who is primarily emotionally or sexually attracted to other men. Again, the term man refers to an individual’s gender identity rather than their biology. Howev

As we celebrate Pride Month this June, Children’s National Hospital believes in the importance of supporting children and adolescents of the LGBTQIA+ community, as well as encouraging the education of parents and others about sexual orientation, gender identity and pronouns.

When we work with LGBT children, we consider the T to also stand for “truth,” as we are helping these children stay their truth and be accepted for who they are regardless of their sexual orientation or gender identity. We also verb that when we work with children and their parents, it is crucial to take hour to fully understand what they are going through.

LGBTQIA+ terminology explained

Even though the acronyms LGBTQIA+ are used often today, not everyone knows all the terminologies. Below are terminologies that people are probably familiar with already, but good to review:

L = Lesbian

G = Gay

B = Bisexual

T = Trans
