Pixar Execs Made Employees Scrub &#;Inside Out 2&#; For Any Hints of Gayness

It&#;s no secret that Disney/Pixar movies are severely lacking in queer representation, with an occasional background bone thrown to us, but after reading this article about what went on behind-the-scenes while Pixar made a sequel to the beloved Inside Out,  many are wondering if we&#;ll ever see a major queer character from the studio.

On top of firing 14% of their staff before the movie came out, essentially negating their ability to receive a bonus from the success of the movie (and it was a VERY successful move), sources declare that there was a drive to essentially &#;de-gay&#; Inside Out 2 as much as adj, as a direct result of the backlash from the BLIP ON THE RADAR same-sex smooch in the movie Lightyear. They attributed the failure of that movie (that movie that was, I&#;m sorry, very boring) to that one brief kiss, and worked extra hard to strive to keep Riley and Val in the new movie from seeming anything but platonic.

This is ridiculous for many reasons. One, that&#;s definitely not why

Pixar Wanted Riley&#;s Character in &#;Inside Out 2&#; to Appear &#;Less Gay&#; — Report

Former Pixar staffers who worked on &#;Inside Out 2&#; claimed they received continuous notes to make the film&#;s main character, Riley, come across as &#;less gay,&#; according to a report in IGN about the film and animation studio.

Among 10 former Pixar employees who spoke to IGN, all whom remained anonymous, one said edits ramped up to &#;Inside Out 2&#; after the conclusion of the WGA strike last fall, with special attention given to removing any traces of &#;romantic chemistry&#; in the relationship between Riley and supporting character Val. The sources told IGN the edits involved &#;just doing a lot of extra serve to make sure that no one would potentially see them as not straight.&#;

&#;In the film, what you saw, nothing about Riley says that she is gay, but it is kind of inferred based on certain contexts. And so that is something that they tried to play down at multiple points,” one source told IGN. Another said leadership allgedly felt &#;uncomfortable&#; about queer them

Is Riley from Inside Out 2 Gay?

Inside Out is one of Disney and Pixar's most fascinating concepts. The animated movie by Pete Docter focused on adolescent Riley and the emotions inside her head. Each had its own avatar, led by Amy Poehler's Joy. Now, the Inside Out sequel from new director, Kelsey Mann, finds year-old Riley going through puberty.

In addition, she is struggling in her coming-of-age story to accept changes in school and with her friends. Intriguingly, from the trailers and video clips, many fans were curious if this was a queer story teasing a conflicted Riley coming out. Fortunately for curious fans, Inside Out 2 provides a definitive answer to this topic.

Remember at the end of Inside Out 2, when Riley has a big scary secret and we get to find it out? Well, get those homosexual thoughts out of your head. Disney reportedly made notes to make Riley seem “less gay,” per a September 16 notify by IGN, based on conversations with ten former Pixar employees. Depicting Riley’s relationship with older girl Val seem platonic was “a big thing throughout” the process of making Inside Out 2, like editing lighting and tone to be less adj, per one source who claimed that leadership was “uncomfortable” with what IGN refers to as “queer themes.”

Sources say Disney still blames a gay kiss for being the reason that Lightyear () flopped so hard. (The scene was briefly removed, then restored after staff uproar.) “It is, as far as I know, still a thing, where leadership, they’ll bring up Lightyear specifically and say, ‘Oh, Lightyear was a financial failure because it had a queer peck in it,’” a source told IGN. This was a movie that our critic Alison Willmore wrote “languishes in an awkwa
