Bert and Ernie are indeed a gay couple, 'Sesame Street' writer claims
Iconic "Sesame Street" puppets Bert and Ernie are a couple, according to a former writer for the show.
In an exclusive interview with with blog "Queerty," Mark Saltzman said he felt that when he was writing Bert and Ernie, he was writing them as a couple and basing their interactions on his own experiences.
"I always felt that without a huge agenda, when I was writing Bert and Ernie, they were," Saltzman told Queerty. "I didn’t contain any other way to contextualize them. The other thing was, more than one person referred to Arnie and I as 'Bert and Ernie.'"
However, Sesame Workshop, which produces the show, denies the pair are together, saying they have no sexual orientation but are best friends.
“As we have always said, Bert and Ernie are best friends. They were created to teach preschoolers that people can be great friends with those who are very different from themselves. The thing though tooth, Bert/Ernie=gay is not some drunken frat boy/family guy meme. It's an essential and inspiring wishful thinking sort of thing for many people. I don't think the Bert and Ernie rainbow shirts are all all a spoof on the meme. I think they are being marketed to gay and lesbian teens and college kids, and I am more than happy about that.

Gather round children. It's finally second to find out whether or not Bert and Ernie from Sesame Street are gay. For years, fans of the tv show have speculated on whether or not the pair are friends or more than that. Now, multiple people involved in the series have commented on the matter. It all started this weekend when Sesame Street writer Mark Saltzman told Queerty that Bert and Ernie were inspired by his own relationships as a gay man.
Speaking to the publication, he said: “I remember one time that a column from The San Francisco Chronicle, a pre-schooler in the city turned to mom and asked “are Bert & Ernie lovers?” And that, coming from a preschooler was fun.
